Four of the most stressful things in life are moving into a new house, remodelling, and picking the right colors — and this couple has been through it all! They bought the house two years ago and spent six months redecorating it, but they aren’t happy with how the living room and dining room turned out. When Greg and Martha decided to get married, redecorating that space became a priority again, but they’re having trouble deciding on the right colors.
The couple painted both rooms the same color of pale gray to give the illusion of more space because the rooms are small. The house is old, and their furniture is fairly traditional. The fireplace is a focal point of the living room, but they didn’t know how to accentuate it other than to paint it white. Both rooms have newly refinished hardwood floors.
HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
• When using bright colour, stick to just two, such as orange and turquoise, which are complementary to each other.
• Keep most of the walls neutral with fresh white and add a strong accent colour on just one wall for impact.
• Limit pattern to cushions and a rug and choose a large sofa covered in a bold, plain fabric.
• Reinforce the existing colour theme with toning voiles at the window to allow the room to be flooded with natural light.
